STUDYING IN THE US

US universities

US universities are global leaders academically. Of the top 500 universities globally, 147 are American: this is 3 times more than the next nearest country.

On average, a US degree will take 4 years to complete. A student will graduate with a major (equivalent to a standard bachelor’s degree) along with a minor (an area of specialisation equivalent to half a bachelor’s).

A US degree is completely transferable globally and internationally recognised. There are over 2000 different majors offered in the US with over 6000 universities available. This means a student can study almost anything they want, in any of the 50 States.

term dates

There are two terms, Fall and Spring: the Fall term begins late August and finishes early December, students then typically have a one-month holiday break over Christmas.

Spring term will begin early January and finish mid-May, with the summer break lasting 3 months. The combined terms mean students will spend 8 months in the US, with 4 months at home each year. This gives them plenty of time to still see family and friends.

In most education systems internationally, students will complete a large block of exams at the end of the year. Interestingly, each semester in the US you will start new classes, meaning at the end of each term you will complete a small block of exams.

A student will typically have 12 hours of lectures per week, which is divided between 4-5 classes (sometimes referred to as modules in the US). This is normally along with an additional 5-6 hours of independent studying.

Classes are also divided between level 1-4: the higher the number the greater the difficulty. To graduate, you must pass a certain number of classes at each level. The academic advisor will ensure that students are enrolled to graduate correctly.

Academic advisors

An academic advisor is assigned to each student athlete in the US.

Their job is to help the athlete schedule their lectures around training, whilst also providing tutoring support and careers advice. Effectively, they connect the academic and athletic departments, so the student has an easier schedule and graduates on time.
